Following the judges' debate, 21 firms have progressed to the awards finals of the prestigious programme, which recognises excellence in the Scottish legal profession.

The winning entries will be revealed at the awards ceremony on Friday 19 March at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre when over 400 practitioners from across Scotland join to celebrate the legal profession in what has become the most prestigious awards programme on the legal industry calendar.

Finalists includes firms large and small covering 12 categories across all major aspects of private legal practice in Scotland.

Large firms Burness, Biggart Baillie and Brodies are joined by mid range rivals HBJ Gateley Wareing, Morton Fraser, Harper Macleod, Digby Brown and Anderson Strathern. Complementing the field, a number of smaller firms have also been recognised with Miller Samuel, Maloco + Associates and Govan Law Centre also making an appearance.

Ms Macdonald said: "It's encouraging to see an increase in the number of firms competing this year sending a strong signal that despite the economic challenges, the profession continues to treat the Legal Awards with the importance it deserves. We look forward to celebrating with all the finalists in March."

The finalists emerged following a full day of judging at a debate chaired by the independent MSP. Fourteen experts from business, law and politics including Andrew Cubie, Michael Walker, former chairman of Maclay Murray Spens, and Professor Robert Black of Edinburgh University participated in a lively discussion to agree on the winners.
